To Pete Duel and all the heroes who have been the ‘object’ of teenage adoration:

I remember the Seventies:

My teenage years were
Brown and orange
Large circles, wide lapels and flares
Tie die and appliqué
Hotpants!
Warm summer heatwaves and cold winter snowdrifts
Oil crises, monetary crises and strikes
Finding beliefs and awakening to politics
Best friends, crushes and falling in love;
The Osmonds and the Jackson Five.
Exams.
Fun. Music. Color.
And underneath……
Isolation. Despair. Fear.
Twisting, turning emotions,
Chaotic thoughts and pain.
Who am I? And, why does it hurt SO much?
And He was always there.

He was the one I talked to
When no one else could/would listen.
His was the picture on my wall.
He was the one I kissed goodnight,
When no one else could get near
He was the one who held me in his arms and
Rocked me to sleep.
He was there, always there.
Though he never knew.

I wish he knew, that
He is here still and that
All I want to say is
